Fencing in Weldon

Fencing in Weldon

Weldon is an old stone village on the east side of Corby, famous for Weldon stone, and its historic centre is now surrounded by later estates that join it to the town. That gives two quite different kinds of fencing job. In the old village, boundaries often meet stone walls and a fence needs to sit neatly against them. On the estates, it is usually replacing panels that were never built to last.

We put up closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards, and composite or aluminium slatted fencing on aluminium posts, with gates, privacy screens and LED-lit capping to match. In the conservation area, appraised in 2009, natural timber sits better beside the stone, while estate gardens can take a more modern slatted finish. Near the Willow Brook, the ground is wetter and gravel boards matter all the more, so we look at each plot before choosing the posts and the panel line.

Weldon specifically

What makes Weldon different

Weldon sits over the limestone and ironstone that were quarried here, and ground can change from natural rock to clay or fill within a single garden. That affects how deep a post needs to go and how well its concrete holds, so we dig before we set out. The Willow Brook runs past the village, where the Environment Agency operates the Weldon flood storage reservoir, so wetter plots get gravel boards and careful post setting. There is no Article 4 direction in Weldon affecting fences.

A typical Weldon job is an estate house on the Corby side of the village, with original panels around the rear garden. We remove them, set concrete posts to suit the ground we find, fit gravel boards and closeboard, and add a side gate. Where the run ends at an older stone wall, we finish neatly against it.

Questions

Fencing in Weldon: questions

What is a typical fence price in Weldon?
Weldon closeboard fencing is a guide £80–£100 per metre supplied and fitted on concrete posts, with slatted composite or aluminium from about £240 per metre fitted at 1.8m high. Taking out the existing panels is priced on the visit, followed by a fixed price in writing.
Does the Weldon conservation area restrict fences?
There is no Article 4 direction in Weldon affecting fences, so outside listed buildings the normal rules apply: up to 2m, or 1m next to a road or footpath used by vehicles, with the usual conservation area limits. Listed buildings need consent.
Can you fence up to an old stone wall?
Yes. We set the end post clear of the wall so we do not disturb it, and finish the fence neatly against the stone so the join looks deliberate. If the wall itself needs repair, we point that out on the visit.
We hit rock when we dug a hole. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. Weldon ground can go from rock to clay or fill within a garden. We check each post position and adjust the depth or method to suit what is there.
