Fencing in Uppingham

Fencing in Uppingham

Uppingham is a hilltop town, and that shapes almost every fence we put up here. Gardens fall away from the house, run across a slope or sit a level above the neighbour, so a boundary rarely runs flat for long. Around the High Street and the Market Place, many properties have rear courtyards rather than gardens, where a neat screen matters more than length. On the roads out and the estates to the north and east, it is longer side and rear runs.

For courtyards we often suggest composite or aluminium slatted panels, which give privacy without the heavy look of solid boards and never need painting. For longer boundaries, closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards is the value choice. Either way we work out whether to step the panels or rake them to follow the ground, and we match side gates and screens so the finish carries through. Where a run meets a neighbour's wall, we finish against it neatly.

Uppingham specifically

What makes Uppingham different

Uppingham stands on Northampton Sand ironstone, which usually drains better than the clay around Oakham but changes from one end of a street to the other. Posts are set in concrete at the right depth for what we find when we dig. The bigger issue is the fall: water runs downhill across gardens, so a gravel board at the bottom of a slope needs to sit right, and the steps in a stepped fence need to leave no awkward gaps. The historic centre is a conservation area, so the usual limits apply there.

A typical Uppingham job is a family house on one of the roads out of town with a garden that drops away from the back door. It means removing old panels, setting concrete posts down the slope, stepping closeboard panels evenly with gravel boards under each one, and finishing with a gate to the side of the house.

Questions

Fencing in Uppingham: questions

What does fencing cost in Uppingham?
Guide prices are £80–£100 per metre supplied and fitted on concrete posts for closeboard, and from about £240 per metre fitted at 1.8m high for slatted composite or aluminium. We price removal of the old fence on the visit, and because sloping runs need stepping, we measure each one on site before writing the fixed price.
Do fence rules change in the villages around Uppingham?
Yes. In Uppingham itself a fence is normally permitted development up to 2m, or 1m next to a road or footpath used by vehicles. But Lyddington, Seaton, Ayston, Preston, Ridlington and Belton-in-Rutland have Article 4 directions, where front walls, gates and fences can need planning permission.
Should my fence be stepped or follow the slope?
Stepped panels keep the top line level in sections and suit closeboard and slatted panels. Raking follows the ground more closely. On Uppingham's steeper gardens we show you both on the visit and recommend whichever leaves the fewest gaps underneath.
Can you screen a small courtyard behind a town-centre house?
Yes. Slatted composite or aluminium screens work well in courtyards because they give privacy while letting some light through. They can be fitted between existing walls, with LED-lit capping if you use the space in the evenings.
