Fencing in Oakham
Oakham gardens are bounded in three very different ways. Around the castle, All Saints and the Market Place, many rear plots already have stone walls, and a fence tends to run off one or sit alongside it. Behind the Victorian and interwar houses off Brooke Road, Braunston Road and Burley Road, long narrow gardens need a straight, solid run down each side. On the Barleythorpe and Oakham Heights estates, the builder's original panels are often the first thing owners want replaced.
We build two kinds of fence. The first is closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards, the best-value option and a long-lasting one when the posts are right. The second is composite or aluminium slatted fencing on aluminium posts, which costs more but never needs painting. Both can be matched with gates, privacy screens and LED-lit capping, so a side passage, a rear boundary and a patio screen can all be finished in the same style.
What makes Oakham different
Much of Oakham sits on the heavy clay of the Vale of Catmose, and that clay stays wet through the winter. Timber left in contact with it does not last, which is why every closeboard run we build here sits on gravel boards above the soil, with concrete posts set in concrete at the right depth. Oakham is also named in Rutland's flood strategy as a surface water risk area, so on low gardens we think about where water will go before we close off a boundary with solid boards.
A typical Oakham job is replacing tired panels along both sides and the back of a semi or detached house garden, often on one of the newer estates or behind an interwar house off Burley Road. It usually means taking out the old panels and posts, setting new concrete posts, fitting gravel boards and closeboard, and adding a side gate to the drive.
