Composite decking in Weldon typically costs £200–£250 per m² supplied and fitted, and softwood timber £110–£140 per m²; for a 15–20m² composite deck, expect £3,000–£5,000. The local concern is the ground: Weldon sits over limestone and ironstone that were quarried for centuries, and a garden can change from natural rock to clay or fill, so each support position is checked before we build.

Composite & timber decking in Weldon

Composite & timber decking in Weldon

Weldon gave its name to Weldon stone, the limestone quarried here for centuries, and its historic centre is built of it. Around that core, later estates now join the village to Corby. The two halves of Weldon want different things from a deck: a modest, natural-looking platform that sits quietly beside old stone in the centre, and a practical composite family deck on the estate houses. In both cases the work below the boards matters more than the boards themselves.

We build both on a braced frame, with posts or pads set on firm ground, a treated or aluminium sub-frame at the joist spacing the boards need, and a weed membrane and drainage underneath so the frame stays dry. Picture-frame edges and hidden fixings give a tidy finish, and steps and balustrades are added where a garden's levels call for a raised deck. Where a garden falls towards the brook, we plan the layout to keep the frame clear of damper ground.

Weldon specifically

What makes Weldon different

Centuries of quarrying mean the ground in Weldon is rarely uniform. Natural limestone or ironstone may sit next to clay or old fill within the same garden, and fill will not reliably carry a deck post. We dig at the support positions on the visit and go deeper where needed. The Willow Brook runs past the village, with the Environment Agency's Weldon flood storage reservoir, so drainage under the deck is designed rather than assumed. The conservation area has no Article 4 direction affecting this work.

A typical Weldon deck sits behind an estate house that joins Weldon to Corby, replacing a lawn or patio with a composite deck for seating and dining, or behind a stone house in the centre as a smaller timber deck. The work starts with digging at each support position, then the frame, membrane, drainage and boards.

Permissions in Weldon

  1. PlanningDecking in a rear garden is normally permitted development if no part of it is more than 30cm above the ground and, with other outbuildings and platforms, it covers no more than half the garden. A raised deck over 30cm needs planning permission, and a listed house needs consent. Listed buildings and the Weldon conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed. Planning Portal: decking
  2. TreesTrees in a conservation area need six weeks' notice before work, and protected trees need consent; both are free. North Northamptonshire: tree protection

Questions

Composite & timber decking in Weldon: questions

What does a deck cost in Weldon?
For Weldon, our guide rates are £200–£250 per m² supplied and fitted for composite and £110–£140 per m² for softwood timber, with a 15–20m² composite deck usually £3,000–£5,000. Deeper supports on quarried ground or a raised design with steps can add to that. Prices are confirmed in writing after the visit.
Do I need permission for a deck in Weldon's conservation area?
Weldon's conservation area was appraised in 2009, and there is no Article 4 direction here affecting this kind of work. A rear deck kept to 30cm or under, and within half the garden once other outbuildings are counted, is normally permitted development. Going higher needs planning permission, and a listed stone house needs consent.
Why does old quarrying matter for a deck?
Because filled ground can be loose or uneven, and a post set in it may settle. We dig at each support on the visit so we know whether we are on natural rock, clay or fill, and set the depth to suit.
Which villages around Weldon do you cover?
Alongside Weldon we build decks in Great Oakley, Little Oakley, Deene, Brigstock and Stanion, and across Corby itself, checking the ground and planning position at each address, as quarried and restored ground turns up across the area.
