Composite & timber decking in Uppingham
Decks that turn Uppingham's sloping gardens and tight rear courtyards into level, usable space, built on ironstone ground we check first.
Composite decking in Uppingham typically costs £200–£250 per m² supplied and fitted, and softwood timber £110–£140 per m². Raised decks with balustrades and steps cost more, which matters here because the town's slopes often push a deck above 30cm at its low end. Above that height a deck needs planning permission, so we measure the fall on the visit before anything is drawn.

Composite & timber decking in Uppingham
Uppingham is a hilltop town, and plenty of its gardens slope. That is exactly where a deck earns its place: rather than cutting into the hill and building retaining walls for a patio, a deck frame on posts can bring the back of the garden up to a level you can actually use. We build composite and timber decks on braced frames, with the joists set to the board maker's spacing and a membrane and drainage underneath.
Around the High Street and Market Place many houses have tight frontages and small rear courtyards rather than gardens. A compact deck can make one of those courtyards feel like a room, and composite boards suit a shaded yard that would turn timber green. On the Victorian and interwar roads out of town, and on the later estates to the north and east, the gardens are larger and the projects are more often a deck off the back of the house with steps to the lawn.
What makes Uppingham different
Two things shape a deck in Uppingham: the slope and the Northampton Sand ironstone underneath. The ironstone usually drains better than the clay around Oakham, but it changes within a single street, so we still dig to find firm ground for the posts. On a falling garden the outer edge of a deck rises quickly, and once any part is more than 30cm above the ground it is no longer permitted development. Water running downhill also needs a route under or around the frame, not into the house.
A typical Uppingham deck is a level platform off the back of an interwar or later house where the lawn drops away, with posts longer at the low side, steps down, and sometimes a balustrade where the height calls for it. In the town centre it is more often a small composite deck filling a rear courtyard.

Permissions in Uppingham
- PlanningDecking in a rear garden is normally permitted development if no part of it is more than 30cm above the ground and, with other outbuildings and platforms, it covers no more than half the garden. A raised deck over 30cm needs planning permission, and a listed house needs consent. Listed buildings and the Uppingham conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed. Planning Portal: decking
- TreesTrees in a conservation area need six weeks' notice before work, and protected trees need consent; both are free. Rutland County Council: tree works
