In Weldon a path, step and border lighting scheme typically costs up to about £1,500 installed, and a full multi-zone garden scheme £2,000–£6,000 or more, with a new outdoor circuit priced separately. These are guides, with a fixed price in writing after our visit. The local consideration is the ground: old quarrying means rock, clay or fill can all turn up in one garden, affecting duct routes.

Garden lighting in Weldon

Garden lighting in Weldon

Weldon is an old stone village on the east side of Corby, famous for Weldon stone, the limestone quarried here for centuries. The historic centre is built of it, and the later estates around it now join the village to Corby. That gives two quite different lighting briefs. In the old centre it is about bringing out stone walls and enclosed gardens with warm, low light; on the estates it is usually a lit patio, path and borders. We design low-voltage schemes for both, and all prices here are guides.

Every scheme draws on the same set of tools: step and riser lights, uplighters on trees and walls, and soft light around seating, linked on one circuit with timers, sensors or app control. Where a patio or path is being laid, ducts go in at the same time so cables never sit under slabs. In a finished garden, we light walls and beds without lifting paving, routing cables in ducts along the edges.

Weldon specifically

What makes Weldon different

Weldon sits over the limestone and ironstone that were quarried here, and the ground can change from natural rock to clay or fill within a garden. Rock makes trenching slow and can push a duct route sideways; clay holds water around buried fittings; fill can hide old rubble. We dig before we design. The Willow Brook runs past the village, where the Environment Agency operates the Weldon flood storage reservoir, so gardens near it get controls set high. Weldon has a conservation area, appraised in 2009.

A typical Weldon job on the newer estates is a semi or detached house with a fenced rear garden: patio step lights, spike lights in the borders and a lit tree at the back. In the old village it is more often a stone house with a walled garden, where warm uplighters graze the wall and a path light leads to the gate.

Questions

Garden lighting in Weldon: questions

What does garden lighting cost in Weldon?
A path, step and border scheme typically costs up to about £1,500 installed, and a full multi-zone garden scheme £2,000–£6,000 or more. A new outdoor circuit is priced separately. These are guides; we put a fixed price in writing after the visit, once we know what the ground is like.
Do I need permission for garden lighting in the Weldon conservation area?
Garden lighting does not need planning permission, and North Northamptonshire has no Article 4 direction in Weldon affecting driveways, porches or extensions. A new outdoor mains circuit is notifiable electrical work, done and certified by a registered electrician. Lights should point down and away from neighbours' windows.
Why does the ground in Weldon matter for lighting?
Because it was quarried. Within one garden we can hit solid rock, clay or old fill, and each changes how a duct is laid and whether a buried light will drain. Digging first lets us route cables through workable ground and pick fittings that suit each spot.
Our garden backs towards the Willow Brook. Is that a concern?
It shapes the design rather than ruling anything out. Near the brook we keep the transformer and connections high on the house wall, seal the ducts and favour wall or spike fittings on the lowest ground, where water is most likely to sit after heavy rain.
