Garden lighting in Kettering

Garden lighting in Kettering

Kettering's older houses, the Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas close to the centre and along the Headlands, often come with long gardens and mature trees. Those trees are the obvious place to start a lighting scheme: one or two uplit from beneath give the garden depth at night, and path and step lights then link them back to the house. We design low-voltage schemes with step and riser lights, uplighters on trees and walls, and soft light around seating. Prices on this page are guides, fixed in writing after the visit.

Interwar and post-war estates make up much of the town, with practical rear gardens where a lit patio and a lit path to the shed or gate are the usual brief. Barton Seagrave to the south east and Hanwood Park on the east side, planned for up to 5,500 homes, bring newer gardens where lighting can be designed alongside the first patio. In every case we would rather fit fewer lights and place them well than flood a garden with light.

Kettering specifically

What makes Kettering different

Ground around Kettering ranges from ironstone to clay, and new-build plots are often compacted subsoil under a thin layer of topsoil. Compacted subsoil sheds water sideways rather than letting it soak away, so buried uplighters on a new plot need a drained pocket of stone beneath them, and duct trenches need proper backfill. Mature tree roots in older gardens mean hand-digging near trunks. The River Ise runs along the east of town, so low gardens on that side get their controls mounted high.

A typical Kettering job is a Victorian villa near the Headlands with a long garden: two uplighters on mature trees, low lights along a path down the middle, step lights where the terrace drops to the lawn, and a soft wall light over seating near the house. The ducts run along the border edges, hand-dug where they pass close to tree roots.

Permissions in Kettering

  1. PlanningGarden lighting does not need planning permission, but a new outdoor mains circuit is notifiable electrical work, so it is done and certified by a registered electrician. Keep lights pointing down and away from neighbours' windows. Listed buildings and the Kettering conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed.
  2. Design and priceWe measure up, check the ground and the planning position, and give you one fixed written price.

Questions

Garden lighting in Kettering: questions

What does garden lighting cost in Kettering?
Typically up to about £1,500 installed for path, step and border lighting, and £2,000–£6,000 or more for a full multi-zone scheme. A new outdoor circuit is priced separately. Those figures are guides, and we put a fixed price in writing after visiting and agreeing the layout with you.
Do Kettering's conservation areas or Article 4 directions affect lighting?
Garden lighting does not need planning permission. Kettering has 26 conservation areas and several site-specific Article 4 directions on individual streets or buildings, so if lighting is part of wider work facing the road we check your address first. A new outdoor mains circuit is done and certified by a registered electrician.
Can you uplight a mature tree without harming its roots?
Yes. We position the uplighter just outside the main root area, hand-dig the last part of the duct trench rather than using a machine, and route around large roots. A spike-mounted fitting needs very little digging at all and can be moved as the tree grows.
Our Hanwood Park garden is mostly compacted subsoil. Is that a problem?
Only for buried fittings. Compacted subsoil does not let water drain away, so we dig out under each in-ground light and fill with free-draining stone. Wall and spike lights are not affected, and ducts are backfilled properly so the lawn above does not sink.
