Fencing in Empingham
Empingham sits at the eastern end of Rutland Water, below the dam, and plots here are often generous, with the reservoir or open fields beyond the garden. That changes the brief for a fence. A full-height solid boundary all the way round can feel like a waste of the setting, so we often suggest privacy where you sit and something lower or more open further down the garden. We plan that on the visit.
Slatted composite and aluminium fencing on aluminium posts suits this well, giving a crisp screen around a terrace that never needs painting, while closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards gives good value for long side boundaries between neighbours. Matching gates, screens and LED-lit capping let the different parts of a boundary read as one design. We also set posts to suit the ground, which varies between the limestone and the wetter land by the brook.
What makes Empingham different
Empingham is on the limestone side of Rutland, and much of the village drains reasonably well, so posts usually get a firm footing. The North Brook runs through the village on its way to the Gwash, and ground near it stays wet, which is where gravel boards and well-set concrete posts really matter. Empingham has a conservation area and no Article 4 direction, so outside listed buildings normal permitted development applies, and natural materials are the safe choice in the conservation area.
A typical Empingham job is a larger house with a long rear garden. It might mean closeboard on concrete posts along both side boundaries, a run of slatted composite screening around the terrace, and a matching gate where the garden meets the drive. Where the garden ends at open ground, the far boundary is often kept lower to hold the view.
