Louvred pergolas in Ryhall
Ryhall sits just north of Stamford but on the Rutland side of the line, so planning here goes to Rutland County Council rather than South Kesteven, and Stamford's Article 4 direction does not reach it. Ryhall has its own conservation area covering the historic village, with no Article 4 direction. A freestanding rear-garden pergola is normally permitted development, but in the conservation area it cannot sit between the side of the house and the boundary.
Being so close to Stamford, many Ryhall homes were built by the same post-war and modern housebuilders, and their gardens follow a familiar pattern: a patio by the back door and a lawn beyond. A louvred pergola over that patio gives a covered space that opens to the sun or closes against rain, which then drains through gutters inside the frame and down the posts. Built-in LED lighting and optional motorised louvres make it a space that gets used well beyond summer afternoons.
What makes Ryhall different
The limestone under Ryhall generally drains well, so a soakaway for the post water is often practical. The River Gwash changes that near its banks. Rutland's flood strategy names Ryhall among the places with a few properties at river flood risk, and ground near the river is wetter. We check each site before choosing between a soakaway and channel drainage, and check the patio at the post positions. Around the green and the church, stone cottages suit latte or light stone frames.
A typical Ryhall job is a 3m × 4m pergola fixed over an estate-house patio, in anthracite or black, with LED lighting and a closed side for privacy. Around the green, a stone cottage might take a light stone frame on new pads, with the drainage planned for ground near the Gwash.

Permissions in Ryhall
- PlanningA freestanding pergola in a rear garden is normally permitted development if it stays behind the front of the house, is no more than 2.5m high at the eaves and 2.5m overall within 2m of a boundary, does not sit on a platform more than 30cm high, and together with any sheds or other outbuildings covers no more than half the garden. A listed house needs planning permission for one. In a conservation area it also cannot go between the side of the house and the boundary. Planning Portal: outbuildings
